RACEGOERS turning up for top meetings on Knavesmire are to be hit with a £5 charge if they wish to park on the course.

York Racecourse today announced that parking prices would be introduced for the John Smith's and Ebor meetings.

James Brennan, racecourse marketing manager, said the fee would be used to pay for a traffic management scheme designed to reduce congestion during meetings when large crowds were in attendance.

A City of York Council spokeswoman said the racecourse had indicated it would be making its own traffic arrangements for the season ahead, which starts next Wednesday, and no action would be taken by the authority.

The decision follows last year's Royal Ascot at York meeting where the traffic masterplan designed by the council, in partnership with the racecourse, police and Ascot, was a huge success.
