A YOUNG man was badly injured in an horrific crash between a car and a lorry at an accident blackspot near York today.

The man was pulled from the wreckage of the Vauxhall Vectra and taken to York Hospital with serious head injuries, following the collision on the A1079 just outside Dunnington.

He worked at the nearby headquarters of the Costcutter supermarket company, along with another young man who was also in the car but suffered minor injuries.

Eyewitness Philip Welch, owner of a nearby business, Philip Welch Specialist Cars, said: "The car is destroyed. They have chopped the roof off to get him out.

"Looking at it from here, there's no damage to the back of the car, so the truck must have hit the side. We just heard the crunch and looked up and saw the car leap up and whack the lamppost."

The German-registered lorry was heading along the A1079 towards Hull when the accident happened.

The accident comes just weeks after the launch of a campaign to tackle safety and improve congestion on the A1079, and after York highways chiefs revealed plans to build a roundabout at a junction near Dunnington.
