Following Judith Walker's letter (Grand Parade, April 26) I would like to reiterate her disappointment at not seeing a picture of a Scout or Guide in the paper from Sunday's St George's Day Parade. I do not wish to take anything away from members of the York Pipe Band, who were smartly turned out, but this day belonged to the Scouts and Guides.

My family have been members of the Lord Mayor's Own Scout Group and 74th York Guides for many years and, like many other Scouts and Guides, they take great pride in their achievement against all the peer pressure put upon them these days. They are proud of being members, and have achieved so much in their badge work and commitment to services to the community.

I feel saddened that York does not recognise the achievement of these youngsters. We hear so much these days about youths' drink problems and vandalism. Let's be proud of the kids who give service back to the community. We should be encouraging them.

Editor's note: The Press could not agree more that the good works of young people should receive coverage. That is why we regularly carry reports and pictures of the activities of groups including Scouts, Guides, youth clubs and schools.
