On the commercial scene there is so much choice these days in the York area that the pleasure angler cannot go wrong.

With spring now well and truly sprung, fish are on the move at numerous venues. Neighbouring venues Poppleton Ponds and the Willows are both in good form with plenty of good carp and bream showing at the former and lots of silver fish and carp coming fron Goldrush at the Willows.

Ridgepool, at the same venue, has produced some good catfish in the last week or so, with fish up to 20lb falling to catmeat or worm.

Anglers wishing to seek out a weekend bargain should head straight to Chapmans Pond in Woodthorpe.

For Yorkshire's favourite price of nothing you can enjoy some great sport from tench and crucians. What the carp lack in size they make up in appearance. One angler bagged over 20 superb golden gems this week. Pole and caster did the damage fished close in over the first ledge.

One fishery high on any 'to-fish' list is the Pool Bridge Farm complex at Crockey Hill. This week has seen fish to double figures falling to floating bread from Normans Lake.

Horse Shoe Lake also saw fish taking surface-baits with floating pellets or chum mixers fished to the island, with a controller float bagging fish to 8lb in three-figure hauls.

Raker Lakes continues to fish well, with some big carp to double figures being taken on pole and cat meat or paste fished tight to the marginal tree cover.

Floating bread is also scoring here and the far-side bomb will work just as well. Fish the floating bread on a hook length slightly longer than the depth of the far-side and the bread will pop up to the surface firmly anchored in place.

Langwith Lakes was in brilliant form last week and match anglers will be hoping the success continues for Sunday's open match on Emma and Anya's Lakes. With 100lb needed to make the top spot recently and a number of other 70lb-plus nets it is shaping up to be some venue.

Some serious bagging has also been going on at Carpvale, especially on the front pond.

Pole and pellet has taken some excellent mixed catches, with lots of carp to floaters. If it is tench you want then look no further than the match lake.
