I AGREE with John Rogers that the use of front fog lights in clear visibility is irresponsible and, at the very least, makes life difficult for the drivers of oncoming vehicles (Letters, January 25).

Part of that irresponsibility lies with the drivers themselves; but vehicle manufacturers must also take some of the blame. They seem to design headlights in order to make it as difficult as possible to replace the bulbs.

On my Mondeo, doing so requires removing the radiator grille and the entire headlight assembly. This process takes around an hour if you realign the headlights properly afterwards, and is not a job for a DIY beginner.

That, in my opinion, is why you see so many cars driving around with a dipped headlight bulb blown on one side (especially in the week or so after the clocks go back in the autumn). Sometimes drivers decide to struggle on until the next service, while others resort to their fog lights.

While on the subject of motoring annoyances, why do the "30 - slow down!" signs on the A19 at Thormanby light up even if you approach them well within the speed limit and decelerating?
