FREEZING temperatures took their toll on the latest fixtures in the York John Smith's Sunday Morning League.

However, the postponements which led to a lack of matches in division one meant that the leadership changed hands yet again in what is becoming an exciting battle with five teams vying for the title.

Severus SC leapfrogged to the top after their 1-0 win over Acomb WMC in what was a closely fought game settled by Darren Sellars' stunning 25-yard drive that rocketed into the top left hand corner.

One point behind them, in third place and still well in contention are Hounds, who soundly beat Pocklington Town 5-0.

Hounds, unbeaten in all competitions this season, saw two volleys from Alan Jackson and strikes from Carter, Crowther and Harkin hit the net to complete the rout.

All games in division two and division three were frozen off while in-form Enterprise edged out Real Way Station of Selby 3-2 to move up to second in division four.

With Enterprise leading 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Hartley and Whelerton, Station hit back through Littlewood (2) to put the pressure on Enterprise, but they stood firm and Whelerton's second clinched the match.

The result of the day in the division went to lowly Carlton Tavern who travelled to the fancied Selby Griffin with ten men and came away with a great 1-1 draw. They thought they had pulled off a remarkable win until Griffin were allowed to equalise in the last moments of the game.

In division five, the only game to beat the frost saw Poppleton Road WMC defeat Pocklington Rangers 5-0 thanks to a Chris Moffatt double, with further goals scored by Jim Clark, Chris Murcutt and Simon Malloy.

The league returns to action on Sunday, January 8.
