NOT content with the damage caused to businesses in York through their absurd high parking charges and double yellow lines (some of which have since been removed), Coun Ann Reid and her colleagues press on regardless with their attack on the motorist via hoping to introduce an "emission charge" to anyone with the temerity of wishing to drive their vehicle into the city centre (December 10).

But did anyone else reading the article find that one type of transport was conspicuous by its absence? The type of vehicles the Lib Dems want to see taxed for entering the city centre are listed as HGVs, 4x4s, big-engined executive cars and old cars.

Where in this list is the biggest miscreant of them all, the bus, which causes pedestrians and cyclists to almost choke whenever one goes by? Stand on the corner of Spurriergate and you'll inhale a mouthful of fumes far worse than any HGV or 4x4 can spew out.

Fortunately, the Department For Transport turned down the application, but no doubt Ann and her buddies will be busy working at some other plan for squeezing yet more money out of the motorist.
