A PLAY fight with a friend on Bonfire Night has ended up costing a Selby man more than £200, and brought him 60 hours of community punishment.

Andrew Ingerson, 22, pleaded guilty to criminal damage, after he and another man fell on to a Rover car while fooling about.

Selby magistrates heard the two were "play fighting" when they fell on to the car, leaving a dent which cost £415 to repair.

Ingerson was fined half of that, ordered to pay £50 costs, and told to complete 60 hours of unpaid work over the next 12 months.

Vivienne Walsh, for the prosecution, said: "The defendant was at the Selby community bonfire. He was with a friend and was play fighting on the way past the medical centre. They fell on to a car and caused quite bad damage to it."

Keith Haggerty, mitigating, said Ingerson, of Church Hill, was not aware at the time that he had caused the damage, and still did not know for certain that he had.

But, said Mr Haggerty, he accepted it was most likely to have been caused by he and the other man falling on the car.

Mr Haggerty said: "He and his friend were in good spirits. They were play fighting; they were not being in any other way disorderly."
