New Earswick Indoor Bowls Club had a smooth ride into the Denny Plate fourth round, comfortably beating Metrodome 95-63 by winning all four rinks.

At home, Bob Edwards' four exerted their dominance between the fifth and 18th ends when they went from 5-2 ahead to 26-7, in their 29-10 victory.

Barry Johnson's rink had a good start leading 10-1 after five ends. Though the visitors came back to within five shots, Johnson's team stepped up a gear to win 27-19.

Paul Dawson was involved in a close game at Barnsley, where the teams were tied at 12-12 after 15 ends. Dawson's side then edged ahead to win 18-14. Jim Bone's rink recovered from an 11-3 deficit after five ends to eventually take the lead on the 18th end at 18-17 before winning 21-20.

York had their away rink of Frank Turner, Fred Clayden, Graham Brooke and Dudley Williams to thank for a stunning 44-12 victory at Blackpool Borough in the EIBA Over-60s Double Rinks Championship.

They won all but six ends, including a run of seven successful ends between the 12th and 18th which yielded 22 shots to take the score to 41-9, scoring a six on the 14th end.

At home, Peter Littlewood's rink struggled. They trailed 18-4, but as they pulled back six shots to make the score 22-10 - and knowing the away score - the Blackpool skip conceded with three ends to play. If New Earswick are successful in their fourth round game against North Cave then they will play York.

Yorkshire Ladies started their two-year Northern Counties League campaign with an excellent win against a strong Cumbria side beating them 124-116. They won four rinks and lost two.

York skip Sheila Turpin enjoyed a comfortable 28-19 victory and Carol Instone won 23-18, though Linda Harrison lost 24-18.

The men also had success with Yorkshire 'B' enjoying a fine 128-108 win over Lancashire 'B' in the Roses Challenge at Blackpool Borough IBC. Yorkshire captain Phil Parsons skipped the highest winning rink of 32-8. New Earswick's Bill Waldie's rink lost 22-12 and Dave Pearson, playing at second in Alan Hodges' rink lost, 22-21.

The second round of Yorkshire League matches take place on Saturday with York playing Huddersfield and New Earswick taking on Harrogate. There are also ties in the Hebden Trophy with New Earswick meeting Featherstone and York playing South Leeds.

In the North Eastern League, York's ladies also play South Leeds, while New Earswick face North Leeds.

On Sunday, York play Ryedale, who include the new world singles champion Mark Walton, in the Egham Trophy. All the weekend's games start at noon.

York's ladies face Hartlepool in the Vivienne Trophy next Thuesday, starting at 12.30pm.
