WE took a stand on Ouse Bridge at the Bridge Street end where people were facing both ways on to the river (because of not being told where the fireworks were to be let off, or any vantage points to stand).

As soon as they were lit, we couldn't see a thing for the Moat House hotel. So much for being able to see them from anywhere in York, this resulted in a crowd surge to the other end of the bridge and the traffic being stopped through sheer numbers of people blocking the road.

As far as public safety was concerned, if anyone had needed medical assistance it was nigh impossible to get to them.

I am given to understand that the firework display was taken away from Clifford's Tower because of traffic congestion and public safety.

At least when it was there everyone could see and the traffic and public safety could never have been as bad as on Bonfire Night.
