What the majority of York people seem to want is a regular weekly collection of household waste, as much for hygiene as anything else, and a less frequent garden waste collection.

Mrs C Hoare (Letters, October 26) states "we lose millions in fines unless the bin collection is reduced..."

With a fortnightly collection 'service', it is inevitable that there will be more than a bin full of waste, especially in larger households. We, the council tax payers, have been told we must take our own excess household waste to the tip. Are we going to be paid for doing the council's job?

By doing so, this will reduce the amount physically collected from our homes, of course, but is there some magic formula whereby the rubbish we take to the tip is disposed of differently from that collected when our bins are emptied?

Surely it all goes to the same landfill site?

If so, what's the point of the council taking away the regular weekly collection?

If the garden waste was a monthly collection, it would save money and time as the collection vehicles would have to be steam-cleaned only once a month.

Regarding the fireworks, we're told everyone for a huge distance will be able to see the display. Why the secrecy as to where it's going to be held - it must be the top of York Minster for us all to get such a view!
