YORK council's approach to refuse collection reminds me of a branch manager I once worked for in Liverpool.

In the mid-Seventies there was an oil crisis which resulted in petrol prices rising dramatically. Myself and other company car drivers were called in and told to reduce our business mileage as much as possible.

I mentioned to the manager that I had just arranged a business trip into North Wales which would result in a round trip of more than 100 miles. My manager suggested that I stayed overnight. I explained that I would still have to come back!

The council claims that reducing refuse collections to once a fortnight will reduce rubbish and prevent an excessive land-fill tax.

As a family, we are attempting to recycle as much as possible as we fully support the need to do this.

Our grey bin was only half full at the end of one week which theoretically means we will now only fill it once a fortnight.

However, after one week it is starting to smell and the weather hasn't been particularly hot! Heaven knows what it will be like in the summer.

It seems to me that the council could collect a half bin-full once a week and still have the same total rubbish for the landfill site.
