MORE bins misery hit people across York as the mayhem of the council's green bin scheme continued in its second week.

As the number of people signing up to our Bin It campaign tops 6,000, residents across the city have been trooping off to waste disposal sites to get rid of their extra rubbish.

Many people say they cannot wait a fortnight to have their overflowing grey bins emptied - and have queued up in their cars to take waste to the tip.

Meanwhile there was confusion in some streets where residents were due to put out their green bins - because the green bins had not been delivered.

It comes after chaos last week when scores of residents put out the wrong bins - because the calendars telling them whether it was a grey or green week were printed wrongly.

Duncan Paxman, 45, of Fulford, said he loaded a big rubbish bag into the boot of his car to take to the Foss Island tip on Sunday, but could not get anywhere near the site because of a huge queue of traffic.

"The queue was well up the road and it would have taken us a long time to even get into the tip," he said.

"We couldn't wait there because we were on our way to a family day out.

"So the rubbish had to stay in the boot an extra day."

Residents of two private roads in Bishopthorpe had their grey bins emptied last week but could not put out their green bins yesterday - because they had not received them. People living in New Lane and Newlands Road were confused as to whether their addresses came under the new fortnightly collections and so put out full grey bins as usual.

One had a note attached to it from a binman helpfully saying: "You should have put your green bins out, rather than grey."

One resident of New Lane said: "I was driving home three or four weeks ago and noticed the green bins had been delivered to all the streets in our area, apart from ours.

"Since then, myself and my neighbours have been trying to ring the council number to ask if we are getting green bins but it was so busy we could never get through.

"In frustration, my neighbour actually sent an email asking the same question - but we still received no reply."

York council insisted the issues were nothing more than "teething problems" and said the scheme would work successfully once people adjusted to it.

A spokeswoman said: "The tonnage of waste going into the household waste sites over the last week has been consistent with previous weeks and there is nothing to suggest that residents are taking additional waste to the sites rather than trying to recycle more.

"Unfortunately, the homes in New Lane and Newlands Road in Bishopthorpe did not receive green bins.

"We have reassured residents that we will deliver the bins as soon as possible and, as they are unable to separate their green waste, we will ensure that their grey bins are emptied again, later this week."
