I READ with some interest your article on the parking bays row (October 7).

Perhaps of most interest is the council's response. It's simple really - the bays are either lawful and correctly marked or they are not.

Repainting would clearly state they are not; as for a small percentage, how small? Why, may one ask, are two sets of markings in use? Surely it should be one, the correct one.

So who is to blame for this fiasco? Well, it has to fall upon those who cause the markings and signs to be painted or positioned - the council and yet another of its comedy of errors.

As for blaming the small print, perhaps the council would be kind enough to point out which legal change they refer to, as those who write the legislation don't appear to know of this change and I am sure both they and we would like to know.

They state that poor motorists paid the fine so they accept it and that's the end of it - are you sure? Perhaps someone will explain how a person can be fined for committing a non illegal act? That's like saying, all right you didn't steal anything but pay a fine anyway.

Surely the reverse applies - it's unlawful to demand money from someone who has not committed any offence.

This is not isolated, there are lots of other signs around that are not prescribed and therefore have no lawful status.

It is fine for councillors to ask for speed cameras, but don't you think a lawfully signed and therefore valid speed limit should come first?
