Selby sprang into life in the last quarter to score two fine tries and win their Yorkshire One derby with Goole 17-3 and regain the Tommy Burton Trophy.

The dour rain-affected match was tied at 3-3 with no side looking capable of winning until winger Martin Protheroe danced over near the sticks to give Selby a 72nd-minute lead.

Then, six minutes into stoppage time, a fine rolling maul was re-cycled to the backs and centre Andy Gabel darted in.

Selby, with six changes to the side which crashed at York last week, began brightly but full-back Andy Banks missed a penalty for offside, and they then knocked-on close to the line.

All the pressure was being created by Selby but they wasted it and Goole started to come more into the game midway through the half, with scrum-half Allan Neal squandering three penalties.

Selby's defence was otherwise sound and the only happening of note in the rest of a mistake-ridden half was the sin-binning of Goole prop Martin Wilburn.

The second half started in the same fashion but, with Wilburn back on after his yellow card, Goole, for whom captain Dave Jackson gave a man-of-the-match display at number eight, took the lead in the 44th minute with a Neal penalty for offside.

Selby immediately rang the changes with Shaun Austerfield replacing young debutant Rob Arnold, who had little chance to impress, and three minutes later, they drew level after good work by the forwards won a penalty for Banks to slot over.

Paul Gabel replaced Richard Fuller and Wright Phillips came on for his brother Duncan around the hour-mark, but Selby still struggled to get out of their half. However, with the Goole forwards tiring, they began to show signs of form.

The forwards then took a scrum against the head and the ball was recycled and fed to Protheroe to score his fine try. Selby still had some defen-ding to do but made the game safe when a penalty to Goole's 20-metre line led to Gabel's try. Banks converted both.
