I WOULD support City of York Council's plans for fortnightly bin collections if there were better recycling facilities for plastics and cardboard in the city.
As a non-driver (should we be forcing people to drive so that they can recycle anyway?), I cannot easily get to Foss Islands Road to recycle my cardboard. Plastics should be easier because the leaflet the council sent with our green bin says there is a plastic recycling point at Tesco at Clifton Moor.
Only one small snag, where is it? It doesn't appear to have been delivered yet and the clock is ticking. This measure will try to force people to recycle, will not encourage them to recycle and will promote fly-tipping as the only viable way to dispose of waste in York.
I can appreciate why the council is forced to do this and I think we send far too much rubbish to landfill sites, but I think we need the alternatives in place first before we start telling people they can't use their bins.
