DO you know which fats to eat to keep your ticker healthy?
While a high intake of saturated fats will increase blood cholesterol levels resulting in a greater risk of heart disease, eating monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in moderation can actually be beneficial.
Tips from Heart Research UK include:
Avoid eating too much saturated fats found in foods such as cakes, pastries, butter, cheese and sausages, pictured
Skimmed milk contains all the goodness of milk without the fat content
Fat free fromage frais and crme fraiche are excellent low fat alternatives to cream
If you do need to use fat choose a "friendly fat" such as olive or rapeseed oil
Low-fat hard cheeses are still relatively high in fat
Never reuse cooking oils - once reheated they are very damaging to your blood vessels
Walnut, hazelnuts and almonds contain "friendly fat" and eating a small amount every day can have a beneficial effect.
