A PUPIL stabbed in the head during an attack in a school lunch break is back in his classes.

The 14-year-old boy, a pupil at Millthorpe School, York, was stabbed outside the Cygnet pub in Dove Street last Thursday.

York police described the incident as a "vicious assault" which left the boy with a wound to the back of his head, a cut to his cheek and grazing to his right ribs and left shoulder.

The boy received treatment at York Hospital the same day for his injuries, including having the wound on his head glued.

His mother reported the incident to the police who have been liaising with the school's head teacher, Tony Wooton, and the local education authority.

Mr Wooton was able to confirm that the boy had recovered well and returned to school.

Initial reports from the police were that the boy had been attacked by a gang, but following a successful witness appeal it has since emerged that there was one attacker.

Mr Wooton said: "It is now known that a single attacker was responsible and that this person is not a pupil at Millthorpe School.

"The police have been made aware of this information."

A spokesman for York Police said no arrests had been made as yet and any further witnesses are asked to phone York Police on 0845 6060247.
