Wigginton'S Neil Cordell fulfilled his top seeding by storming to victory in the Yorkshire Under-17 Boys Squash Championships at Pontefract.

The Joseph Rowntree School pupil dominated the tournament and only conceded nine points in taking the title.

Comfortable victories in the early rounds were followed by an emphatic 9-0 9-0 9-1 defeat of Abbeydale's Nick Hornby in the quarter-final and a similarly resounding 9-2 9-0 9-1 win over Yorkshire team-mate Eddy McGuire, of Pontefract, in the semis.

Final opponent Sam Wileman, also of Pontefract, had beaten Cordell in the semi-finals last year, but revenge was sweet as the Wigginton ace quickly got into the groove and, with his line and length causing Wileman too many problems, won the contest 9-4 9-0 9-1 in little over 20 minutes.

Other Wigginton players did well at the championships, led by Tom Pepper, who finished fourth at U15 level, while McKenzie Nichol was eighth and Sam Burton 11th. Dan Boyle was tenth in the U13s.

The Yorkshire Squash League begins for Wigginton this week with fixtures for the premier league side today and first division side tomorrow.
