HALF-A-million dollars is up for grabs - courtesy of our owners here at the Evening Press.

We want to hear about the hard-working groups and vital projects in our readership area, which could be in with a chance of winning the cash grants on offer.

The grants are available to worthy causes across the country in areas served by the Evening Press's UK parent company, Newsquest.

The cash is put up twice a year by the Gannett Foundation, an arm of Newsquest's American parent company.

The Gannett Foundation especially wants to hear about projects that benefit people with special needs either through disability or disadvantage.

It also gives priority to youth projects - particularly those which engage or involve young people in their development.

But please note, there are some causes to which grants will NOT be awarded.

They are:

Individuals or organisations that are not registered charities

National or regional organisations (unless the project addresses specific local community needs)

Uniformed youth groups, including Scouts and

Guides

As part contribution to a full or part-time salary, or to running costs

For church restoration or maintenance, or for religious causes

Endowment funds, general appeals, general contribution to costs or multi-year campaigns

Medical or research organisations

Animal charities.

Grants of up to £5,000 will be awarded, but larger sums could be available for exceptional projects.

Evening Press readers in the past have had a share in the generous hand-outs on offer from Gannett.

Earlier this year Shopmobility - the York scheme which loans scooters and wheelchairs for those with mobility problems - celebrated by buying a new electric scooter after being given a £1,500 grant from the foundation.

Scarborough Women's Aid, which runs a sanctuary for women and children in the town, won a £4,000 grant to buy new equipment.

The Malton-based Encephalitis Society, which provides support for sufferers of the disease and campaigns for better awareness, was also awarded cash.
