I SHOULD like to join your many readers complaining about the changes made to the rubbish collection in York with the introduction of only fortnightly collections of the household waste bins.

The new garden waste bins are of no use to the many people with little or no garden. I have a large garden and an allotment but I would rather stick to the present system and have the normal bin emptied weekly.

My son lives in Sussex and he has just changed to having two bins which are emptied on alternate weeks. However, the second bin - called a burgundy bin because of the colour (well it is Sussex) is for re-cyclable items as follows:

Paper and cardboard - newspapers, magazines, computer paper, office paper, leaflets and pamphlets, all packaging card, all cardboard, wrapping paper, greetings cards, envelopes, catalogues, telephone directories.

Metal containers - all food/drink cans and tins, petfood cans.

Plastic bottles and containers - all plastic drinks, milk, detergent, cleaning, shampoo and cosmetic bottles.

I have written to the council suggesting this would help them in their objective of reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill and would be more acceptable to the residents of York.
