THE Joseph Rowntree trust has raised concerns about how easy it is to get almost any information about almost anything on the internet (August 17).

It enables those who can to find out almost everything they want to know about an address and district they may consider moving to; its educational, health, religious, sports and social facilities, and even, its present occupiers and neighbours. They say it could lead to even more social divisions in our society.

Having moved up and down the country and back again to our present and 13th home, I offer a simple piece of advice.

Make a shortlist of possibles from the brochures of several agents, go and see them, talk to the occupants and neighbours if possible, then when you find one you like go around the district and see for yourself what it has to offer. You can even go to the local council offices if you feel the need. This is a reasonable course of action.

Most old sayings are based on common sense and experience of life, not modern technology. "Birds of a feather flock together", and "There is safety in numbers" are two to get you started.
