INDIVIDUALS using the proposed Arc Light homeless centre at Shipton Street will be entering a community where drugs are easily obtainable -

as can be observed by residents on an almost daily basis - and where they may be vulnerable to victimisation by the anti-social element in Clifton who congregate in the alleyways and outside shops and vandalise property.

Service users could face hostility and attention they do not need at a stage in their lives and who are trying to move forward.

It is also less convenient and, therefore, there may be less motivation, for individuals to access all the city-based services such as Compass. Residents are feeling very anxious about the proposal. It is unclear how the service will operate within a densely populated residential area.

Of course people will worry about the value of their properties and increased crime. I can't pretend that as a young woman who sometimes walks home late from work, I won't also be worried about getting back safely without hassle. There is already cause for concern about using certain pathways.

Clifton residents have been feeling disappointed with City of York Council for some time and it is understandable that there is an angry reaction when people are not kept well informed and their local area is already ill-maintained.

There is a disgusting litter problem where streets and alleyways are regularly heaped with trash and broken bottles, and houses and cars are often burgled or vandalised. There has been little visible evidence of these issues being addressed.

I attended yesterday's exhibition on and hope it provides some answers to how the centre would work within the community.
