FRESH hope emerged today for the future of York's Odeon cinema, after bosses launched a bid to serve alcohol and stay open longer.

Managers at the Blossom Street picture house have lodged the application with City of York Council, which campaigners hope could signal an intention to breathe new life into the run-down attraction.

The Evening Press launched its campaign to Save The York Odeon more than 18 months ago.

Our petition, handed over at company headquarters in London by York MP Hugh Bayley last spring, was signed by more than 14,000 residents.

Cinema bosses have been tight-lipped over the site's future, saying only that the viability of the cinema was under review.

A spokeswoman for City of York Council confirmed the Odeon was seeking permission to serve alcohol at the cinema between 11am and midnight, and to extend its opening hours between 7.30am and 4.30am.

The cinema has not sold alcohol at the site for a number of years.

Odeon campaigner Derek Atkins, who recently wrote to cinema bosses to ask them to make a definite decision on the site, said the application was a positive step forward.

"This is very good news," he said.

"If they wanted to close the cinema, I'm sure they wouldn't go to this much trouble.

"Sadly it's a very slow and painful process."

A spokeswoman for Odeon Cinemas said: "I can confirm that, due to recent changes in licensing laws, Odeon York has reapplied for a licence to sell alcohol on its premises.

"Whilst Odeon York has renewed its existing licence, there is currently no plan to sell alcohol on its premises.

"However, most cinemas, as well as other entertainment venues including theatres, have a licence to sell alcohol, as it provides another alternative to soft drinks and coffee.

"It is hoped that, should Odeon York decide to use its licence in the future, it would enable cinema goers the chance to enjoy a drink while watching their chosen film."

Mr Bayley said: "I've offered to help them with any future (refurbishment) application and I hope that one will be made before long."
