WE felt we had to reply to the article written by Graeme Robertson and headlined "Tight squeeze for Alley Cats" (Life&Times, July 23).

We would like to share with readers our own Alley Cat experiences of candlelit, cosy winter evenings, sharing a good bottle of house wine served in chilled glasses along with an appetising combo, carefully chosen background music, and friendly staff.

The intimacy of the bar area is a bonus, but if this is not to your taste there is a more spacious setting upstairs.

We feel that any change, given the age and size of this old building, would damage the unique character and special ambience.

Although we sympathise with parents of small children and wheelchair users, in York we are very lucky that there is a wide variety of places to eat that could accommodate their needs.
