YOUNG anglers were shown the way home by 13-year-old May Potter in the first Smarties Cup sponsored by York-based confectionery giants Nestl Rowntree.

The fixture drew a field of 44 of the best junior anglers in the North East to the Langwith Lakes complex at Heslington, where they tackled the fishery's Kevin's and Bethany's Lakes.

Potter, from Helperby, near Easingwold, was drawn on peg 24 on Bethany's Lake and fished tight to the far-side, wielding 14 metres of carbon. She hauled out a magnificent 74lb 4oz of carp to 4lb fishing shallow with pellets.

Danny Huxley (Barnsley) took second from peg 11 on the same lake, where he used corn and pellet for a small carp bag of 47lb. The only other female competitor, Kayleigh Smith (Smartbait, Leeds), was third from peg 28.

She put together a good late run of quality carp from corner peg 28 on Bethany's to finish on 36lb 12oz.

Top weight by a York angler was taken by Richard Woods who finished fifth with his 35lb 14oz net of small carp.

Matt Prescott from Nestl and John Littlewood from the Environment Agency, who also helped with sponsorship, presented the prizes. Other sponsors included Garbolino, W B Clarke's and Gem Boxes.

Fresh from shattering the record books at Carpvale, Mick Addinall trounced the opposition in the York contest at Laybourne Lakes.

Drawn on peg 34 on Marley Lakes, he alternated pellet and paste to keep the fish coming.

Most of his winning net consisted of small carp and tench taken on pellet fished to the far bank but a brace of 9lb fish that fell for paste fished down the middle boosted his net to a hefty 53lb 8oz.

Others: Mick Ogden (Bradford) 37-5-0, Barry Richardson (York) 37-4-0, Dave Findlay (York) 27-3-0, Brian Pallister (York) 27-0-0 and Steve Hollingworth (York) 24-4-0.
