IN support of Philip Robinson's letter (July 19), it is time City of York Council was told what the people who use the city's roads think.

There are several problem areas that need attention to relieve congestion. Why place bus stops and pedestrian crossings near busy junctions and traffic lights - examples are Holgate Road/Poppleton Road?

Whose idea was it to move the bus shelter closer to the junction and also narrow the road at the same site, then place a seldom-used pedestrian crossing nearby?

As for the buses, why have hideous 18-metre "bendy buses" been introduced, taking up two lanes at junctions so they can turn left on York's narrow roads?

Remove double deckers, tour buses and the crawling railway museum "train" bus. York is small enough for tours on foot. I often walk to the city centre and seldom have I seen a bus even half full. Bring back the old "hoppa" buses.

Advise businesses to offload goods from lorries after peak times.

Last, but just as important, before York is totally congested by further development north and east of the city, the northern bypass must be dualled with flyovers and underpasses.

I have also read about the proposed closure of Ouse Bridge and Lendal Bridge. What next?

We pay council taxes for these poor facilities not facts and figures conjured up in your ivory towers.
