THERE is a new name on the York Primary Schools' Kwik Cricket trophy after Robert Wilkinson Primary school beat Archbishop of York Primary in the final at Bishopthorpe.

The Strensall side racked up 195 runs in an innings that had been tight until final pair Jordan Nelson and Edward Hicks smashed 49 runs in their four overs to put their team beyond reach.

Archbishop of York then found the going tough against the in-form bowling and fielding of Robert Wilkinson.

Sean Leetham and Nathan Watson combined for a particularly deadly spell as they took three wickets between them to restrict Archbishop of York to just 163 runs and help crown Robert Wilkinson, who only had half of their team from Year 6, champions.

Teacher Chris Evans said: "It's the first time our school has won and it's nice to get our name on the trophy. We bowled and fielded as well as we have done all season in the final."

The win came after a run of five group and knockout matches, including a tense semi-final against previous champions Hemplands which had been decided on the last ball.

He added a vote of thanks to Archbishop of York teacher Jonathan Green, who organised the entire competition.
