THE season starts here for many of the York-area non-league clubs with the pre-season friendly schedules getting under way.

Newly-promoted Goole will be looking to show off some of their new signings tonight when Sheffield United arrive for their first run-out of the campaign (7.00pm).

Former Hull City and Barrow captain Lee Warren has been snapped up by the UniBond Division One side.

Manager Paul Marshall has also pulled off a coup in signing Pickering Town ace Gavin Dickinson, with Goole lad Rob Constable - most recently seen at York City on loan last year - another possible addition.

A host of trialists will be fighting for a Harrogate Town shirt tonight when League One Huddersfield Town visit Wetherby Road.

There have been a host of changes at Wetherby Road after several players crossed the Pennines to be with former manager John Reid at Stalybridge Celtic once their contracts expired in the summer.

But Neil Aspin is in the final stages of cementing a solid squad for a full-on assault on Nationwide North.

Former York City trainee Adam Arthur will be looking to make an impression after a brief appearance in last week's 3-1 defeat to Darlington, with ex-Hull City man Nathan Peat, Roy Hunter and defender Paul Stoneman also on the cards for another run-out, kick off 7.30pm.

Selby Town kick off their pre-season tonight at home to Leeper Hare York and District League side Dringhouses (7.45pm).

The Robins, who are keen to banish the painful narrow miss of last year with a fresh promotion push in the Northern Counties East League premier division, have lined up seven warm-up matches in total.

Nationwide Conference neighbours York City visit Flaxley Road on August 3 for a 7.45pm start, with Guiseley (July 23, 3pm), Rowntrees (August 6, 3pm) and Brigg Town (August 9, 7.45pm) also dropping by.

Next Monday, Selby take on York City under-19s in the Inshops Cup at 7.30pm, while Kippax are the opposition in the Temple Newsham Cup on August 1 at 6.30pm.

Pickering Town are hoping for a sparkling performance next Tuesday when a Newcastle United XI visit the Recreation Ground for a pre-season friendly.

The Magpies will drop by for the warm-up fixture as the Pikes ready themselves for another season in the NCEL premier division.

The league season kicks off on August 20 but Pickering will not start their campaign immediately as they go to Bacup Borough in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup.

If they win, they will be at home the week after in the prelim round to either Ashington or Esh Winning.
