ROWNTREES Ladies are pushing hard for second spot in division one of the York Badminton League.

A superb 5-4 away win over Clifton was followed by a 6-3 home win over University Students.

Clifton pair Shelagh Barker and Geraldine Screeton took three home wins, but Rowntrees hit back to claim the bonus points when Emma Andrews and Joyce Palmer beat Lorraine Ellis and Sandra Robinson 15-8 18-15.

Rowntree Men's team could not emulate the women and lost 7-2 to Clifton 'A'. Martin Bell and Neil Hunter had the best home series with three wins for 120-67, including a 14-18 13-9 15-5 win over Craig Dobson and Phil Grant.

Rowntree Men's team suffered a further reverse when they lost 7-2 at IT Sports. Chris Schofield and Andrew Cooke returned 92-58 in taking three IT wins.

Drax 'B' travelled to Sutton village hall to play Huntington in Men's Two and were good value for a 5-4 win thanks to the good form of Andrew Dunning and Richard Course who took three wins for a total of 90-48.

Philip Zealand and Carol Waterhouse took the Tadcaster 86 'A' consolation point as their side went down 8-1 at University Students 'B'. Duncan Bosworth and Rebecca Astle topped the student averages with three wins for a total of 90-32.

Drax 'C' spoiled RI T/T 'A'' s 100 per cent record in Mixed Three by winning 7-2 at Selby. Sue Hardy and Dave Walsh top-scored with three straight wins for a total of 92-42. Ian Sinker and Marilyn Powell took two Institute points but lost out 16-17, 3-15 to Walsh and Hardy.

Drax 'B', also operating in Mixed Three, scored a comfortable 6-3 home win over Pocklington 'B'. Andrew Dunning and Sue Matchett led Drax's charge with three straight wins for 90-48. Ashley Holt and Val Nolton took two wins for the visitors but lost 11 and six to Matchett and Dunning.

Ryedale continued their improved form with a 6-3 home win over Knavesmire in Mixed Division Four. Linda Fairclough and A Daffern put up the best Ryedale display with three wins for 90-27.

Fulfordgate 'A' kept on the winning trail in Mixed Five with a 6-3 win over Tadcaster 86 'B'. Best display came from Fulfordgate's Gill Soothill and Matt Hobman, who came back from being 4-13 down in the final end against Richard Middleton and C Topping to win 15-8, 6-15, 17-14.

Selby Jubilee beat Fulfordgate 'B' 7-2. M Walforth and G Johnson took three Jubilee wins for 93-62 including a six and 13 over Pete Twidell and Maureen Medlar.

Middlethorpe 'B' enjoyed a further success when they beat YUSC 'B' 6-3 in Mixed Seven. Ann Oxley and Ian Thompson had one of their best series together with three wins for 110-85.
