Shepherd Engineering Services, the York-based building company, has received the prestigious 1997 safety award from the British Safety Council to add to its clutch of similar prestigious safety awards over the past two years.

The firm, based at Mill Mount, York, was one of only 1,000 winners from large and small enterprises all over Britain in both public and private sectors to face a tough test to satisfy the independent awards panel.

Apart from low accident rates, winners had to have good safety policies and a commitment to health and safety from the board of directors downwards.

Each had to have a specific, named health and safety officer (or equivalent) and provide details of any impending legal action relating to health and safety.

Shepherd Engineering Services won a National Safety Award and Five Star Safety Award in 1996 and last year earned the British Safety Council Sword of Honour.
