THE first silverware of the local amateur rugby league season fell to York Acorn 'A' as they defeated Selby Warriors 22-0 in the York and District Accident Cup final.

The Blue and Golds second string lifted the trophy to emulate their senior side, who had been defeated in five previous final attempts.

The destination of the trophy was rarely in doubt as Acorn, who had put out holders New Earswick All Blacks at the semi-final stage, dominated at White Rose Avenue.

Acorn's final hopes have previously been ended by Punch Bowl (1982), Heworth (1983, 1985 and 1991) and New Earswick All Blacks (1995).

However, the 'A' team, which is expected to finished second or third in Yorkshire League Alliance division two, set the record straight with a whitewash of the Warriors.

Tries went to second rower Gary Endersby, winger Stephen Waldron, Geoff Ellis and centre Paul Sawyer. Experienced stand-off Paul Smith kicked three goals.

In the National Conference League, Heworth and New Earswick All Blacks were forced to sit it out as the weather took hold.

The Villagers, whose premier division home game with Askham was a casualty, are due to play Beverley at Elmpark Way on Wednesday (7.30pm). The postponement of the All Blacks' trip to Hull Dockers in the second division leaves the York side with three games still to play.

Meanwhile, Featherstone Lions need just one more point from their final two games to clinch the second division title. The Lions defeated Dodworth 26-20 but second-placed Siddal won 26-8 at home to Ovenden to keep their slender championship hopes alive.

New Earswick All Blacks 'A' were defeated 24-14 by White Rose Avenue visitors Milford in Yorkshire Alliance division two.

Former York scrum-half Terry Smirk kicked two goals and a drop goal to lead his Ideal ABI side into the final of the BNFL National Cup.

The Hull side, who beat Thornhill 17-16, will now play the winner of next Saturday's semi between Ellenborough and Redhill in the final.
