A York building company has won a major contract to keep the Millennium Dome pulsing with power.
Portasilo Ltd, a subsidiary of Shepherd Building Group Ltd, of New Road, Huntington, has signed a deal with electronics firm Merlin Gerin to supply and install eight custom-built Portastor equipment housings for the London Electricity plc's power supply to the dome.
The deal is for an undisclosed sum, although it is thought to be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, and is part of a larger agreement between London Electricity and English Partnerships, the Government agency which revitalises brownfield sites.
Each housing will be tailored to suit Merlin Gerin's switchgear and positioned within elevated services cylinders surrounding the dome. Mounted on steel structures, also manufactured by Portasilo, the housings will be lifted and then slid into the services cylinders.
