Having just read (October 7) that the closure of Queen Anne School is now probable by the year 2000, I think the City Of York Council should look into the true reasons for closure.

Notably the fact that Queen Anne site is sitting on a gold mine; might this be blinding the council's view on closure?

It is true that Canon Lee School is virtually full and will soon become over-subscribed when all the nearby housing developments are completed?

However, it would seem logical that these new children should be transferred the mile or so towards York to take up the surplus places at Queen Anne. It would then not be necessary to expand Canon Lee School and save York Council some cash there. The question cannot be about the standards at Queen Anne, as Ofsted's public report said the school provided good quality education. Where, also, will all the out of school activities transfer to, along with the popular music weekend workshops? I hope some importance is attached to these.

I hate to be cynical, but I hope Queen Anne School doesn't end up as Queen Anne Long Stay car park. The last 90 years of schooling must not given up lightly.
