Tonight we give parents an early opportunity to look into the eyes of this year's Christmas nightmare. Say hello to Furby.
The six-inch-high toy looks like the progeny of an owl and a Gremlin. It demands attention, and responds to light, touch and sound. The £30 Furby is basically a Tamagotchi with a fur coat.
This is tipped as the 'must-have' toy of 1998, so stocks are bound to run out immediately. But long-suffering parents can take solace in the thought that Furby is cheaper, cleaner and less time-consuming than that other cute Christmas favourite: a puppy.
