AS ONE who can remember clearly the derelict state of the Aldwark area at the time of the Esher Report in 1968, I must disagree with James Hendry's views of the redevelopment of this area which includes Bedern (Letters, October 26).
It is a pity that the writer did not re-read the report instead of relying upon his recollections. Now that the St Andrewgate housing has been completed the plans for this area contained on page 106 of this report have been carried out exactly as Lord Esher suggested.
Indeed the 'new Aldwark,' as Esher called it, is a triumph of conservation in a historic town and has served as a model for other towns all over Europe.
There is still a great deal of ignorance about Lord Esher's study and, although your newspaper is wisely often reminding us about it, perhaps a small exhibition could be arranged to remind us of the remarkable planning and conservation successes over the 30 years that have elapsed.
