Rowntree Halt, shortly before it was closed in the late 1980s
Paul Kirkwood and Helen Butler make an appeal to readers who remember the old Rowntree Halt station. Can you help?
The York-based Ebor Group of Railway Modellers are reconstructing the railway line which ran beside the Rowntree factory. The project will take 18 months to complete and will depict the quarter-mile section of track between the Haxby Road and the Wigginton Road bridges as it would have been in the 1950s.
In those days the railway was very much a part of everyday Rowntree life, bringing both goods and people to the factory. Each morning a passenger train brought workers from Selby to the Rowntree Halt station, taking them home again after their shift.
Model layout manager, Jim Whitehead, would like to hear from anyone who worked on or used the railway, particularly if you can provide photographs of the view of the factory from Hambleton Terrace. Any information - from the layout of the station to the livery of the trains - would be extremely useful. If you can help, please contact Jim on York 630492.
