In his book The King's Grace, John Buchan wrote: "Leadership does not consist only in a strong man imposing his will upon others. In that sense it has no meaning for a British Sovereign.

"But in a far profounder sense the true task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, since the greatness is already there. That truth is the basis of all religion. It is the only justification for democracy; it is the chart and compass of our mortal life."

How many of your readers would support that same suggestion, faced as we all are with the proposed sacrifice of our own country's hard-won democracy within the political framework of a single European union, single European currency and the increasing costs to our own country and every Commonwealth country, of a politically impotent and seemingly corrupt European Parliament?
