Scarborough's impressive teenage centre-back, Michael McNaughton, has survived an injury scare which could have sidelined him until the end of the season.

It was feared the 19-year-old had suffered a depressed fracture of the cheekbone during Saturday's 1-1 draw at high-flying Brentford, the Seasiders' first match with Colin Addison in charge.

Tests over the weekend could not reveal how serious the problem was due to the swelling.

Fresh examinations have now shown a small crack but the injury should not prevent McNaughton from playing.

"I may have to play with some sort of protection but I am pleased that it is not as bad as it looked after the match," said the teenager.

And there was more good news for a second Boro youngster.

The Seasiders' Under-15 goalkeeper, James Jowsey, has been selected for England to face the Republic of Ireland, at Preston's Deepdale Stadium, on March 12.

Jowsey, who lives in Filey, played for the national team in the autumn and has been the subject of considerable interest from other clubs.

Another Scarborough youngster, James Almond, recently moved to Manchester City with a compensation package believed to be worth around £50,000 agreed between the two clubs.
