Cade Trophy for village's six-shooters

We are the champions: Appleton Roebuck School footballers celebrate their Cade Trophy success. Chris McMellon, front) hoists the trophy aloft, watched by, from the left, James Pittaway, Tom Cartwright, Joe Carter, Charlie Peary, Nick Simpson, Danny Chipper and James Mills

Selection headaches are not usually a problem for Appleton Roebuck County Primary School's football team.

The school may only have ten boys in years five and six from which to select a squad but it didn't stop them being crowned York and District Under-11s six-a-side champions.

Their route to the Cade Trophy began back in November, with more than 20 other schools taking part divided into six groups.

Each group winner won through to the finals at Burnholme Community College with Appleton Roebuck ultimately victorious.

Head teacher Derek Angood said: "We are absolutely delighted. This is the first time we have won it and I am pretty sure we will have been the smallest school to have entered the competition."

The champions are now gearing up to take part in the North Yorkshire finals at a date to be fixed.

Westfield were runners-up and Hempland third.
