Birds have got half of North Yorkshire in a flap. Pigeons are constantly fouling York's best buildings; gull culls have been introduced on the coast; and now Stamford Bridge residents are seeking help to deal with swarms of starlings.
The parish council approached pest control experts Rentokil for advice. Councillors were hoping to get their hands on a tape of a startled starling to frighten the flocks over the parish boundary.
Rentokil suggested a more basic solution: bang your dustbin lids together. Unfortunately, however, Stamford Bridge is a wheelie bin town. These plastic receptacles are waste-eating wonders but are hopeless at scaring birds.
This just proves progress always comes at a price.
