For ABB, read CPP. The credit card insurance company, set to be one of York's biggest employers in the 21st century, opened for business on the site of the ABB carriageworks today.

Only a few staff are in place at CPP's Holgate Road premises. But they are the human face of the area's regeneration, and a very welcome sight. Over the next five years, they should be joined by many hundreds more.

The CPP operation is an example of a fast-growing sector of the service industry: the call centre. Shoppers who have lost their credit card will be able to phone CPP for speedy assistance. And their reassurance will be all the greater when the help is delivered in a soothing York accent.
