Licensing laws need to be liberalised to stop the "11pm rush" for food and transport when pubs close, Selby Labour MP John Grogan has stressed.
John Grogan: call to stop the '11pm rush'
He told the Commons more "flexible and liberal" closing times were needed like in Scotland.
He urged Home Office Minister George Howarth in the Commons to bring in such reforms.
Mr Grogan, who chairs the All Party Panel on Liquor Licence Reform, said: "A more modern system in England and Wales could help to cut crime by abolishing for ever the 11 o'clock rush."
Mr Howarth said he was seeking a balanced system which respected the rights of drinkers for greater freedom and of local residents who live near pubs and clubs.Proposals were expected to be ready for public consultation early next year.
