Emerald Ale may look different - but it is, in fact, normal beer in content, with the normal consequences if too much is consumed.

The St Patrick's Day special was on sale at Scruffy Murphy's, in Micklegate, York, today only, at £2 a pint. Punters were offered a choice of lager or bitter green ale if they decided to order a pint of the strange concoction.

Bar manager Alan Welch said: "It is a trade secret how we make it, but I can say that it is very lagery tasting, if you want lager, and beery tasting if you pre-fer bitter. It is completely safe, though you might get drunk.

"Obviously customers will be given the choice - they don't have to drink the green stuff if they don't want to. I'll admit that the colour can be a little off-putting."

He said the Emerald Ale had been on sale from 11am along with breakfast. "It is quite a tradition to last the full 12 hours so we do offer breakfast," he said.
