The world beckons for teenager Harriet Lamborn.

Fencer: Harriet Lamborn

Pointed exchanges of the most competitive kind will be the province for Harriet as she heeds an international call.

The 16-year-old Bootham School pupil has been selected to represent Great Britain in the world championships in Hungary at the end of this month.

Harriet, who hails from Angram, near Rufforth, has been fencing for the past five years after first being introduced to the sport when she attended the Mount School.

She initially tried foil, but has since risen up the rankings to earn recognition as an epeeist.

A member of Harrogate Fencing Club under the guidance of Brian Matless, she also has specialist training in Durham from a Hungarian fence-master.

Her school, Bootham, is cock-a-hoop after hitting new heights on the basketball court this season.

As reported in the Evening Press last month, the York independent school has already celebrated success at the double after its Under-15 and Under-16 squads were crowned York and Selby District champions.

Now the school's Under-14 squad has also won its district championship after beating All Saints' RC School and Easingwold, in the finals held at Millthorpe School.

With Bootham also winning the York and District Under-19 rally, it had been a "momentous season" for the school said head of PE Colin Raper.

He said: "We have celebrated the opening of our new sports hall in spectacular fashion.

"All these achievements have been praiseworthy, especially the Under-14 team who had to come through a three-way tie breaker after the schools had finished first equal in the leagues.

"In two of the finals matches the result was in doubt right to the end with the winning points coming in the last few seconds."
