Trainer Jeremy Glover and jockey Jimmy Fortune, strongly represented by Captain Scott in Doncaster's Worthington Lincoln Handicap on Saturday, can warm up for that valuable assault by taking the feature honours over the same course and distance tomorrow.

The £20,000 Worthington Spring Mile is designed to accommodate the needs of those horses which fail to make the cut in the Lincoln and Glover and Fortune field a very able representative in Scene, who is awarded the nap vote.

The four-year-old showed improved form after joining Glover last summer, winning at Thirsk - after a ten week absence - and Haydock, and also running several good races in defeat.

Effective on fast and soft ground, Scene is particularly at home in a strongly-run race over a mile, so tomorrow's furious cavalry charge down the Doncaster straight course should suit her admirably.

Like the Lincoln, this race is something of a lottery but Scene is strongly fancied to come out on top.

Avro Anson, who is being lined-up for a second tilt at the Martell Grand National, is set for an unusual preparation by running in a Flat race tomorrow - the two and a quarter miles Raceform On Saturday Handicap.

The gelding, trained in Norton by Julie Camacho, will benefit considerable from this timely racecourse outing (even if it is without fences), but cannot be seriously fancied to win. A much more likely scorer is Noufari, who has been running well on the sand throughout the winter and will not fail on the score of fitness.

The Town Moor Handicap over six furlongs looks a real lotter, but The Downtown Fox, narrowly beaten in a maiden race at this meeting 12 months ago, is one for the short list.

Furthermore, the four-year-old hails from the Bryan McMahon stable, which is usually firing on all cylinders at this time of the year. Jimmy Fortune takes the mount of The Downtown Fox.

Mick Channon won the Bawtry Maiden Selling Stakes last year with Inya Lake, and racecourse whisper suggests the former footballer, with his two-year-olds again well forward, can stage a repeat with Paradise Yangshuo.

But the Lambourn raider may be foiled by Kevin Ryan's Rathclogheendancer, who has reputedly been showing up well on the Hambleton gallops, Adrian McCarthy has the ride.

Over the sticks at Kelso, which shares Channel 4 televised coverage with Doncaster, make a note of Ilahabad in the Peter Day Memorial Handicap Hurdle.

Trained by Jimmy FitzGerald for legendary commentator Sir Peter O'Sullevan, Ilahabad has won his last two races, including one on this course. Now into handicap company for the first time, he can complete a hat trick.

The £25,000 Ashley Investments Scottish Borders National Handicap Chase takes pride of place and this four miles slog looks tailor-made for Prime Example.

Martin Todhunter's progressive stayer, successful at Ayr in November, overcame a three-months' absence to win at Market Rasen recently. He will relish this stamina test and will have the assistance of Richard Dunwoody.
