A deaf man was plucked to safety from the River Ouse after his car plunged into the water.
Passers-by who saw the Nissan Micra submerged near Skeldergate Bridge in York called the emergency workers to the river bank at Bishop's Wharf, opposite the St George's Field car park.
By the time North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service arrived at around 10.15 last night, the man - who was the only occupant of the car - had escaped from the vehicle and was pulled from the water by firefighters.
He was taken to York District Hospital with mild hypothermia.
The police underwater search and rescue unit recovered the car.
Sergeant Colin Ventress, of York police, said investigations to establish what actually took place were still at a preliminary stage.
