DRAMA gripped the centre of Selby when a man climbed on to the roof of a 100ft mill and appeared to be about to jump.

A crowd gathered to watch as the man climbed from the roof at the side of the Westmill Foods Rice Mill on to fire escape steps.

The tension continued for another two hours until two police officers, Acting Inspector Iain Spittle and PC Russ Buckroyd, put on fire service safety harnesses and managed to remove him from the stairs.

The man, said to be in his 30s, was taken to Selby Police Station and was later said to be receiving medical assistance.Acting Insp Spittle said a woman police officer and a paramedic started negotiating with the man.

"After some time he came on to the staircase, where we continued to talk to him, but he remained in an agitated state."
