After several weeks the work on rebuilding and reshaping the traffic calming humps in Haxby and Wigginton is almost complete. It is unbelievable that so much money has been expended on this exercise when the roads themselves are in such a deplorable condition.

Oh, I know they're separate budgets, but what is the point in doing one thing only to worsen the condition of another? In this respect I refer specifically to the situation which exists in Westfield Lane, Wigginton. On wet days we always have two duck ponds at Wigginton, the normal one and the one that forms at the junction of Westfield Lane/Mill Lane. The foundations for the new humps are such that they now held to form a dam, so worsening the situation.

The conditions in Walmer Carr are little better with the road surface breaking up completely. It is now more than two years since an inspector told me that he found it difficult to know where to start marking out for remedial repairs. In fact he said the sub-surface needs attention and patching is a waste of time.

Since that time, several potholes have been filled and patches re-patched.

I feel that City of York Council has failed to fulfil its contract in every respect, but in the meantime we are expected to pay our council tax for an inferior service.

I would not want to hear the usual silly response from the council that this problem was inherited from Ryedale Council. Three years have passed since that unfortunate take-over and we should expect City of York Council to carry out its obligations to us as promised at that time.

A L Rowntree,

Walmer Carr,

Wigginton,
