How disgusting that City of York Council turned down the St Helena statue, which I feel sure would have enhanced St Helen's Square (St Helena statue idea is kicked out, October 1). At present the square is uninteresting, with dull shops and crude seats. The statue was exotic and would have been enjoyed by many tourists and York people.

Someone suggested a fountain instead - but one only has to look at the fountain in Parliament Street to see this would not be a good idea.

It is a shame a beautiful statue has been overturned, while in the past Stonebow and the toilets in Parliament Street were allowed to go ahead. But I congratulate the Civic Trust for its effort to create something exciting and beautiful to see for the Millennium Year 2000.

...You can't have a fountain in St Helen's Square if it's going to be like the other two we have which are very badly designed and not at all pleasing to look at. I suggest a white rose set in the ground and four Georgian lamps in a line.
